Herv's magificent remix of Whanau from my last album is available for free as part of the !Kaboogie! 5th Birthday sampler. I have collected a few other remixes which will no doubt surface for download very soon.

I have begun experimenting with a new setup that allows for a more a lot more instrumentation and improvisation and have also taken up trumpet so expect some live appearances with all new material in summer 2011.

Who is Love Rhino?

I am Jonathan O'Riordan, a singer, musician and electronic producer from Dublin. Although I mainly focus on guitar, I also play saxophone, electric bass, glockenspiel and whatever other instruments I can fit into my home studio. I have been making musical noises of various sorts since the early 1990s. As a singer-songwriter, I have played in various venues in Dublin, Galway, London, Paris, San Francisco, Auckland and Wellington. I have also played in various bands - namely Phned cZensic and Schpampipe - as guitarist, bassist and singer.

I began making electronic music in 1999. My first electronic performance was in 2002 for Alphabet Set at the first Dublin Electronic Arts Festival. I released my first 12" two years later on the Invisible Agent label (more info below). My current musical flavour is a fusion of electric guitar, live looping and crunchy electronic production, resulting in a rich, vibrant, uplifting sound with a distinctly funky edge. Follow the various links further down the page to hear some of my tunes.

Tumatakuru

(Début album released July 2009)

Five years in the making, "Tumatakuru" is a blazing mix of funky guitar chops, breakbeat rhythms and crunchy synthesised gorgeousness. It was written and produced in Wellington, New Zealand, hence its title, which is Maori for "Wild Irishman".

Consisting of eleven tracks, it moves between sparse acoustic pastures such as the stripped back "Moonlight on a Rhino's Horn", which features acoustic guitar, saxophone and drums (performed and recorded by Mark Finlay), to the roaring bassline and savage, unrelenting beats of the vocal-infused "Chunky Nonsense", textural, soporific soudscapes like the haunting "Evensong on Woodwind Swamp" and funky, rock anthems like "Yeux Du Faucon".

Released as a limited run of 100 CDs, with gorgeous artwork from Annushka Sonek-Wienert. It can be purchased for €10 from Spin Dizzy and Road Records in Dublin. The album can also be purchased by mail order from Road or by emailing me directly.
